DPF Problems on Diesels: Causes, Symptoms & Solutions

The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) traps soot from your exhaust and periodically burns it off in a process called regeneration. When that process fails, problems follow — and they’re some of the most common issues we see on BMW and VAG diesels.

Why DPFs clog

• Lots of short, low-speed journeys — the DPF never gets hot enough to regenerate.
• Underlying faults (EGR, sensors, injectors) that stop regeneration completing.
• Repeated interrupted regens that leave the filter increasingly blocked.

Symptoms to watch for

• DPF or engine management warning light on the dash.
• Loss of power or “limp mode”.
• Poor running, increased fuel use, or a strong smell during regens.
